Pre-Arrival Orientation

Pre-Arrival Readiness Checklist Heritage Community College provides incoming international students with a structured pre-arrival readiness checklist to support compliance with Canadian immigration and provincial requirements. The checklist includes, but is not limited to:

• Application for a valid study permit through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
• Enrollment in British Columbia’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) or confirmation of private health insurance coverage for the initial waiting period
• Guidance on securing appropriate accommodation prior to arrival, including off-campus housing options

Designated International Student Advisors are available to provide individualized guidance and respond to student inquiries to ensure that pre-arrival requirements are clearly understood and completed prior to entry into Canada.

Pre-Arrival Information Sessions

The College conducts pre-arrival online information sessions to provide students with essential information related to academic expectations, institutional policies, student services, and life in British Columbia. These sessions include opportunities for students to ask questions and seek clarification from College representatives, supporting informed decision-making and preparedness prior to arrival.

Post-Arrival Orientation

On-Campus Orientation and Facilities Overview

Upon arrival, Heritage Community College delivers a formal post-arrival orientation program. This includes an organized campus tour designed to familiarize students with College facilities, including classrooms, student services offices, study areas, and common spaces. Students are provided with information on accessing academic and administrative support services.

Community Resources and Settlement Information

As part of the orientation process, students receive information about essential community and settlement resources. This includes guidance on:

• Public transportation systems
• Local healthcare services and clinics
• Libraries, grocery stores, and essential retail services

Informational sessions are delivered to support students in navigating these services safely and independently.

Canadian Culture, Rights, and Responsibilities

Orientation programming includes an overview of Canadian social norms, legal responsibilities, and cultural expectations. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

• Tenant rights and housing responsibilities
• Workplace standards and professional conduct
• Public behavior, safety expectations, and applicable laws
• General awareness of provincial and federal regulations, including driving laws

These sessions are intended to support student integration, promote compliance with Canadian laws, and assist students in adjusting to academic and community life in British Columbia.

Ongoing Student Support

Heritage Community College maintains ongoing access to student support services beyond orientation. Students may seek assistance from designated staff regarding academic concerns, settlement challenges, and general student well-being, in accordance with College policies and procedures.
